Mountain restaurants in Chamonix

Chamonix: Mountain Restaurants There is a wide variety of mountain restaurants to choose from in the Chamonix valley. Here are a few of our personal favourites:

Le Panoramic

Located at the top of the Brevent ski area (2525 meters), you will find Le Panoramic.

With spectacular views of Mont Blanc you can sample traditional Savoyarde food. As Brevent is the only ski area in the valley that you can walk to from Chamonix town centre, it is the perfect place for skiers and non-skiers to meet for lunch or a drink. It is accessible by gondola then cable car, and is open all day for coffee, snacks and lunches. Le Panoramic offers rustic home cooking which you can eat on a sunny terrace, or if the weather takes a turn for the worse, at the indoor dining room and bar area. You can chose from homemade soup, a plate of charcuterie, foie gras, tartiflette, pasta, steak and cassoulet. There is a selection of wines from the local Savoie area and desserts which are made on the premises. You can book a table in advance which is particularly useful for larger groups.

Plan Joran

Located at the top of the Argentiere ski area is the Plan Joran Grands Montets. It has a beautiful terrace and inside there is a large chimney that creates a very warm atmosphere. Choose between waiter service, a cafeteria, snack bar and even a kiosk for coffee, ice-creams, aperitifs and liqueurs. Considered as the best mountain restaurant in Chamonix valley, the food is comparable to the better quality places in town. The bar, situated at the entrance of the Plan Joran self service, also does home made pizzas that are superb. Downstairs there is a large indoor picnic room for packed lunches.

La Bergerie

Located at the top the Planpraz telepherique is La Bergerie de Planpraz. It is a wood and stone alpine restaurant, giving a very rustic atmosphere. It really is a beautiful spot with views of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix valley. La Bergerie serves very good traditional Savoyard specialities like gratin, tartiflette and great steak. Other unusual dishes include the andouillette - a very large tripe sausage. It has both self and table service options.

La Cremerie

Accessible via the Grands Montets ski station above Argentiere is a beautiful little log cabin in the woods. Hidden away in the mountain, with no roads, no people, just a little mountain hut specializing in fondue, croute (cheese on baguette), and red wine. It also serves delicious filling pizza style bread with loads of different toppings. Good vegetarian ones too.

Refuge de Lognan

Located in the Grand Montets ski area, Argentiere. This is the best place to eat when skiing the Grand Montets. Be prepared to walk from the ski area but you only have to walk along a prepared route. The building is a mountain hotel in the midst of beautiful mountains, with a lovely terrace for spring-time lunches and a charming timbered dining room for the winter. You can sit in the sun or inside the old building and enjoy good food and great views at affordable prices. It is very popular so booking is essential in high season.
